A driver is a program that allows a specific device, such as a printer, display adapter ,network card, sound card ,modem, etc to communicate with the OS (Operating System -Windows XP,Windows Vista, Windows 7,LInux,etc).

When you purchse a new hardware component for your PC ,a device driver must be provide by the manufacture of the device free of charge.Although a new hardware device might be installed on your computer, Windows cannot use the device until you have installed and configured the appropriate driver.

Before buy a new hardware device you must check compatibility of the device with your Operating system and version. Because even the device work with Windows XP it might not be work with Windows Vista.
